The legend says that Jupiter was fighting Saturn. Jupiter threw a thunder bolt and missed Saturn. And where the thunder bolt hit the ground, a hot spring appeared. Therefore, the name: Terme di Saturnia (Saturn’s hot springs).
Another legend said that Saturn grew tired of the constant wars of humans, and sent a thunderbolt to earth. The thunderbolt created a magic spring of warm sulphurous water which would pacify mankind.
I could try to convince you to go visit the already famous Terme di Saturnia, but as the old Chinese saying goes “a picture is worth a thousand words”. So, here you go: your reason to go there in aprox. 1000 words.
The place is known as Terme di Saturnia, because it is located near the little fortified village of Saturnia, in the Italian region of Maremma, in Tuscany.
The exact name of the place is Cascate del Mulino. The Waterfalls of the Mill. Just a huge waterfall bath, really.
If you like rough, unspoilt, natural beauty, this is the place. (If you prefer a little more comfort, head to the Terme di Saturnia Spa nearby. There is a golf, too. And it’s pretty.)
How to get to Saturnia
Saturnia is located half way between Florence and Rome. You’ll most probably fly to Rome, so, to get from Rome to Saturnia you can either be adventurous and take the train(s) – it will take a while – or rent a car (at the airport, please, you really don’t want to drive in Rome. Really!) and head North. It’s a little less than 2h drive. Quite scenic. (Well, if you’re not car sick. The hills are rolling and so is the road.)
Where to stay
You’re spoilt with choice. From 2* to 3* campings to “agriturismo” to a 5* resort you have everything your heart desires and your budget allows.
Does the hot spring water have any benefits?
Well, they say the hot spring water is good for your skin, your lungs, and your liver. And your well-being. I cannot say anything about the former, but I can confirm the latter.
There is such an incredible feeling of relaxation the next day (something similar to a very good deep-tissue massage).
So, really, don’t worry too much about the health benefits. Just find your own cosy natural spring pool and relax. The water temperature is at a nice 37.5°C. It’s heavenly.
What to visit around Saturnia
Go visit the beautiful fortified village of Montemerano. It is one of the most beautiful villages of Italy. You’ll understand why once there. Go for lunch. The food is amazing and so is the gelato.
